I've been reading Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, the beautifully talented author that I fell in love with after reading Eat, Pray, Love many years ago. I was so excited for Big Magic that I went to Barnes & Noble to buy it the first day it was released almost two months ago. After reading the first couple pages I was obsessed, and probably could have finished it by the end of that day, but I tend to read a good book much like I eat the last piece of my favorite cake: very slowly, savoring every bite because I don't want it to end.
There's so much of this book that resonates with me, but I want to share this one particular snippet because it aligns with my motivation behind I Think, Therefore I Dress and find it to be a poignant view on self expression.
In Part III of the book, titled 'Permission', Liz writes about her neighbor, Eileen. Eileen is described to acquire new tattoos the way Liz acquires a new pair of cheap earrings - "just for the heck of it, just on a whim." When Liz asks Eileen how she allows her body to be marked with permanent ink so casually, Eileen explains it's because they're temporary. "My tattoos are permanent;" she tells Liz, "it's my body that's temporary. So is yours. We're only here on earth for a short while, so I decided a long time ago that I wanted to decorate myself as playfully as I can, while I still have time."
I loved that. Because I too decorate myself. Maybe not in tattoos (although I've strongly considered it a few times), but in words, outfits, shoes, acting, traveling, dancing, and all the things I love. Isn't this what expression is? People decorating themselves in the things they love? Heck, it doesn't matter if it's watching grass grow, if you love it, DO IT. Decorate yourself boldly. Color yourself bright. Choose to decorate your existence with things that make you happy - things that make you, you.
For my outfit inspiration this week I decided to decorate myself in this suede skirt/turtleneck combo and black over the knee boots. To be completely honest, I've been decorating myself in this skirt since late spring and all throughout summer - gotta love a piece that easily transitions through the seasons!
My current obsession this fall has been over the knee boots. Wear them casually for the day, or at night with a formfitting LBD - they're super versatile and I love styling them with different outfits. As the weather in NYC begins to cool down I've been wearing fleece-lined knee highs underneath, made by Kushyfoot. My OTK boot obsession is not going away any time soon, so I'm very thankful I have these lifesavers to keep me warm throughout the freezing winter!
Decorate yourself with the things you love.
